Accident can be defined as

a sudden detrimental happening not necessarily but usually trigged by human recklessness violating the immutable laws of nature.

Life is fragile, fleeting and fugacious in its nature. Man is here and gone tomorrow. Man is mortal and mortals must die one day. None can enjoy an eternal bliss in the world of transitoriness. But the does not imply than man should let himself by swayed and swallowed by the stormy swell of fate. Therefore man is intensely prudent to ensure his safety. He takes precautionary measures to be safe and sound. But, in spite of his enormous efforts and strenuous struggle, he cannot drive back the decree of fate. We all know that scores of accidents occur all around the world. Thousands of people lose their precious lives in these accidents and many of victims are left behind crippled and disable. Perhaps this surging stream of human blood is still insufficient to quench the insatiable thirst of furious fate. Gloucester says in “King Lear”:

“As flies to wanton boys are we to gods, They kill us for their sport”

Accidents are always pathetic, pitiable and painful. They bring about sorrow and suffering; dejection and depression; woe and worry; trial and tribulation; agony and affliction and even demise and death. The accident I am going to narrate is painfully pathetic. Once my mates and I made a programme to spend a few days in the serene and soothing surroundings of Swat. We finalized the programme straightaway. We started off our journey at dawn. We all were excited and thrilled. At last, we reached a twisty and steep road of Malakand Pass. Though the road was broad, it looked somewhat scary and never-racking. But the scenery around was so mesmerizing that it kept us spellbound. The forested mountains and present a panoramic view. The perennial plants growing on the mountain slopes, tall trees, balmy breeze, amiable atmosphere, vast valley and sweet-smelling surrounding soothed our souls. Flowery shrubs and incense bearing herbs made the entire atmosphere aromatic. Fluffy clouds were drifting leisurely in the firmament. The sun was peeping through the thin cloudy veil. This was the weather we needed to alleviate the stress and strain of boring city life.

We were entirely absorbed in sweet sensations when we heard the deafening noise two buses coming from behind. The buses overtook at neck-break speed. The reckless did not know they were involved in a death-race. All of a sudden truck appeared from the curve of a cliff and collided with one of the buses. The second fast flying bus also crashed against them and three vehicles rolled down the slope at terrific into the deep gorge below. It was a horribly harrowing scene. The heartbreaking shrieks of ill-started passengers echoed in the mountains. We got down the jeep quickly and rushed to the spot to help the passengers. The slope was too steep to be climbed down. After a desperate struggle, we managed to climb down the vertical cliff. We reached the place where the utterly smashed vehicles were lying. It was a horrible scene. The injured were crying and moaning with pain. Some people were lying unconscious in the pools of blood. Some died then and there. Human flesh and blood was visible on the arid stones all around. It was a terrible sight. Everyone was horror-stuck. The shock had paralyzed all of us. But then we rushed to help the injured. In the meanwhile, few policemen arrived there. They took the injured to the nearby hospital. We could stand it no longer. We cancelled our programme and returned home with heavy hearts. The effect of accident was so shocking that whenever I recollect this regrettable accident I become deeply depressed. May the departed souls be blessed with eternal joys of heaven! Aameen!
